Adaptive Art Hearts

Adaptive Art Hearts. I have very small Adaptive Art classes this year. In one class I have only 3 students! All the students are very young, non verbal and my goal right now is to work on getting everyone to grasp their tools. The heart projects shown here are from this small class. This project was inspired by Mrs. Picassos Art Room blog post "Marble Painted Hearts." I switched it up quite a bit though...
I like to layer many art material experiences into one lesson... We started by grasping paintbrushes and dragging them back and forth across a piece of paper. Students would dip their paintbrush in white, blue and then red paint, and watch the colors change on the paper. Wow! We set that aside to dry. Next up students drew with chalk on a colored piece of construction paper. As students drew the aides and myself would ask what color they were drawing with. Next up I pulled out some precut sticky tape shapes and students worked on identifying the shapes as they dabbed the shapes on a wet sponge and placed them onto their chalk drawings.
The next art class students painted again, this time watching what happens when you dip your paintbrush in yellow and blue paint and drag it onto your paper. Pretty exciting! As that paper dried we folded the chalk drawing in half, drew a half heart shape and cut the heart shapes out (using hand over hand with the students.) The final step was trimming down the painted paper to fit the 8 1/2 square size requirement of Square 1 art, and gluing down all the pieces.

5th Grade Zentangles

Have you ever done Zentangles with your students? I googled searched them a lot this summer and really wanted to try it with my 5th graders. I decided to make it the beginning of the year lesson and use them for their Square 1 Art work. They turned out great and the students loved making them! I think there is a lot of Zentangling happening in homes right now! :)
We started the lesson by staining the Square 1 Art paper they provided. We ripped tissue paper up and placed pieces onto wet paper, then painted more paper over the top. We talked a lot about color mixing during this part of the process.
When the paper dried we peeled the tissue paper off and disgarded it.
This is the finished paper.
You can see we had folded back the label portion of the paper...
Now for the Zentangles! All students created two sample patterns. I hung all the samples up so if they ran out of ideas they could check the chart and try one of the ones posted there.
The students traced their hand on a white piece of paper. They Zentangled patterns on the hand, cut out the finished design and glued it onto the tissue stained paper. The final design was their choice on the colored paper surrounding their hands. We talked a lot about CONTRAST with this lesson... varieties of light, medium and dark areas of designs that moved your eye around the artwork. They were very successful I think!

1st Grade Cities at Night

Square 1 Art Lesson. I started the school year off with Square 1 Art lessons because my due date with them was coming up pretty quick. For 1st grade, I tried Deep Space Sparkle's "Cities at Night" lesson. Thank you Deep Space Sparkle! They turned out great... and was a very good beginning of the year project as it allowed me to assess cutting and gluing skills.
I pre-cut the black construction paper to fit the 8 1/2" square size of the Square 1 Art paper. I glued the finished work onto their labeled paper - it worked great. We cut rectangles and squares from colored paper and used q-tips to add stars and a moon at the end.
